Prepping Your Deck for Summer

All the winter rain can leave your deck slimy and slippery; now that BBQ season has arrived it’s time to get things cleaned up!

Old School Method:

In a bucket; add 1 gallon of hot water, 1 cup of bleach, 1/2 cup of TSP (trisodium phospate).  Get a stiff bristled push broom and a pair of googles. Splash the cleaning solution around and scrub that slime away.  This labour intensive method works great. Don’t forget to hose down the deck afterwards to remove any traces of the cleaning solution.

New School Method:

Rent/borrow/buy a pressure washer.  On wood decks use the nozzle with a wide fan so that you get an even clean and don’t damage your deck.  Most pressure washers have an intake hose for cleaning solutions.  Use the bleach/TSP solution above or, if you have delicate plants around, investigate biodegradable cleaning products like 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaning Solution.  Don’t forget to dilute as per the label instructions.  Grab those googles and pressure wash the whole deck.  Move at a steady pace keeping the nozzle the same distance from the surface the whole time, that way you get an even appearance.  Don’t forgot those goggles, and never point the pressure washer nozzle at your feet or any other body part.

Brand New School Method:

Call us at Westcoast Modernscape for an estimate on a new deck.  It can be bigger, more functional, and more beautiful than before. Estimates are free!
